There are a few considerations to make prior to pulling the trigger to buy your first ATV, dirt bike or Side-by-Side.

Perhaps the first consideration is whether you plan to ride alone, with the other half or with the whole darn family. Dirt bikes are definitely a solitary sport as are most ATVs. If you plan on riding an ATV with a passenger make sure you buy a two-up model. Riding a single seat ATV with a passenger is not recommended. Some Side-by-Sides can seat up to 6 people but never carry more people than the number of seat belts.

Another consideration is the purpose of the OHV. Will it be primarily used for work or for play? Most manufacturers makes specific sport and utility models plus crossover models that are good at both sport and work.

One consideration that’s not optional is the use of a helmet and eye protection. Proper protective gear is essential to your safety and your enjoyment. Riding gear protects you from crashes, the elements and even things like poison ivy and thorny bushes.

In most parts of Canada there will be a local club to show you the ropes. These are volunteer organizations that create and maintain the beautiful trails around you. Membership is always a bargain. The clubs are a great way to meet people and can get you up to speed on the do’s and don’ts of off road riding.

The clubs can also hook you up with training. OHVs are not toys and they demand your respect. Why not be the best rider you can be! Take the training!

Full sized OHVs are not toys. Only allow kids to ride age appropriate models. Never use booster or infant car seats in an OHV. It is recommended that kids in Side-by-Sides be able to grab the hand holds and touch the floorboards with their feet while strapped in.
